Due to a natural gas interruption because of the cold weather we were told to burn alternative fuel until further notice by our natural gas supplier. I contacted Canadian Biofuel to enquire about supplying wood pellets to burn in our bio mass boiler on Wednesday morning and by the next day we had pellets being unloaded into our storage bin. Vanderveens’ Greenhouses, one of the largest greenhouse operations on the Prairies, was facing a dilemma shared by many other greenhouse growers. “With gas prices for heating skyrocketing, we weren’t sure if we could economically stay open and keep growing throughout the winters anymore,” says Kelvin Vanderveen. “We needed to find an alternative source of heating.” Their solution was to convert to biomass.
